Our Wedding

View More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawJust over six months ago, my alarm went off at 4am, and I opened my eyes to the best day of my life. Giddy excitement mixed with peaceful contentment— it was our wedding day, and I couldn’t wait to marry my love. Since Buck and I just celebrated six months of marriage, and because today is Valentine’s Day, I think it’s a good time to finally post some of our gorgeous wedding pictures and share a bit of our story. Our wedding was absolutely perfect, and our photographers captured our day exactly as I wanted it captured. You can read Gina’s sweet blog post here, if you want to read/see from her perspective.

Buck and I love being married. Some people told me that the first year is hard, and I should be prepared for that. Lots of people told me marriage is wonderful and that I would love it. No one told me that I would wake up every morning and pinch myself, because surely this can’t be real life… it’s too sweet. It’s not without it’s difficulties or moments of frustration, but that’s a natural part of loving another human being— we’re sinners, and we sin against each other (sometimes intentionally and sometimes ignorantly), but there is a sweetness that comes from showing grace and walking in committed love— knowing that I’m in this for life, and he’s in this for life, and we love each other and we’re not going anywhere. Our wedding day was the first step in a lifetime of loving, serving, and giving to one another,  with joy and excitement and a whole lot of laughter.

Our greatest desire was that the Gospel was proclaimed well at our wedding, and that the way that we went about both planning and engagement would accurately reflect the glory of God. That desire was a great filter for us— it realigned a lot of our priorities, especially mine. We didn’t emphasize (with time or budget) things that many people would, or choose things toward which I naturally lean. And that was a good thing for us. We did our best to keep a balanced perspective— that our marriage was more important than our wedding, and our wedding itself more important than all of the little details that go into it— and I think we achieved that goal. We wanted to emphasize relationships— to be surrounded by our families and closest friends— and to be married at the place that meant so much for us, our relationship, and our individual walks with Christ— Capitol Hill Baptist Church. And to enjoy our day. 🙂

Jeremiah 31:12— “And they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord.”

A few random facts about our wedding:

  • We got engaged in May and married in August. We got engaged and planned our wedding in just 100 days!
  • We had somewhere between 400-500 guests at our ceremony!!
  • We had two receptions— one for all of the ceremony attendees at our Church, and the second at McLean Gardens Ballroom. The second one was for our family and closest friends, which numbered roughly 140.
  • We had our First Look at the same spot where Buck proposed 100 days earlier.
  • We shared our first kiss at our First Look— my first kiss ever! Feel free to ask more questions about that one. 😉
  • We had 5 different coordinators for the different parts of our wedding. That might sound like overkill, but we didn’t want our families or our wedding party burdened with too much, so we broke up our tasks into manageable chunks, wrote job descriptions for each of those chunks, and then found volunteers to handle each of those chunks. It relieved SO MUCH STRESS for everyone involved!
  • My wedding dress has an amazing story to it. I only paid $38 for it!! I’ll write more about that in another post. 🙂

I’m sure there are questions you might have about some of these points, or about our wedding in general. I’d love to do a few Q&A posts about our wedding, so please leave questions in the comment section below, and I’ll answer them in upcoming posts!

Enjoy a bit of our story. 🙂

xoxo,

Sarah Bradshaw

View More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawBuck and I chose to do a First Look, and it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. We both agree (and say it again, often) that next be being pronounced “Man & Wife,” this was, by far, THE best moment of our wedding day. It was early (8am), so there weren’t many tourists out yet. We were both nearly bursting with excitement and anticipation for the day, and seeing each other gave us the time to calm down and just be with each other, before the rush of the day began and we were surrounded by people. Having the time to connect and be together in quietness and solitude allowed us to enter into the remainder of our day as one entity, in “togetherness,” and that was important to us. And it gave us time for more pictures, which was a plus. We wanted to spend as much time with our guests as possible, and this allowed us the freedom to limit the time between ceremony and reception(s). We did our First Look, about 30 minutes of portraits of us, and then we did our wedding party pictures before showing up at the Church.

Another reason why the First Look was so important to us was this— the First Kiss. This was the first time that Buck ever kissed me, and it was perfectWhen we first started dating, we talked about physical boundaries, and we both knew that we were committed to waiting until marriage to have sex. That was a personal decision that we’d both made as individuals, long before we ever met each other, and we were both thankful to be on the same page with that decision while dating. In order to help us keep that boundary, we both had boundaries for kissing, as well. Before dating Buck, I thought I would be okay with kissing during engagement, but as soon as that ring was on my finger, we both realized that in order to keep our first boundary (no sex until marriage), we were going to have to keep up the second as well (no kissing). It was hard, but it was absolutely worth it, and absolutely the best decision for us.

Why was it worth it? Because I got to see my darling husband fight to love me selflessly— with his words and with acts of service, when all we both wanted to do was make out or more. His commitment to self-control built up so much trust in my heart, and helped us to both love each other, pursue each other, and get to know one another with our minds and our souls before ever knowing each others’ bodies. This built a foundation of trust, selflessness, and respect during our engagement that paved the way for sweet intimacy in marriage. I know it’s not the decision for everyone, but it was definitely the best decision for us, and we don’t have any regrets. Feel free to message or comment below if you have more questions or want to hear more about this decision. We’re happy to talk about it. 🙂

This was at McLean Gardens Ballroom, which I consider to be one of DC’s hidden gems in terms of reception venues. Here’s a review I wrote for them shortly after our wedding:

We discovered McLean Gardens Ballroom in a random Google search, looking for venues for our wedding day. We became interested in the Ballroom first based on price and availability, but the more time we spent planning, talking with the staff, and preparing for our wedding day, the more we realized just how perfect our reception venue was for us. They were incredibly professional, thoughtful, gracious, and accommodating to our every need. They worked with us on a menu that was sensitive to various food allergies and sensitivities among the guests; they cared for our elderly grandmother with grace and gentleness; they were efficient in set-up and clean-up; and were willing to bend over backwards, if necessary, to give us what we wanted, to help us stay at/under our budget, and still provide an elegant atmosphere and experience. I would highly recommend them to anyone marrying in the DC area.View More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawView More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshawSOOOOO happy to be married to this man!View More: http://ginameola.pass.us/bradshaw

What a gorgeous couple and lovely styling (such beautiful flowers!), you must have had so much fun shooting this wedding. Nice job!

  2. love, love, LOVE seeing wedding photos and seeing how your wedding came together. Marriage is such a precious thing, and as pretty as weddings are, they never quite compare to the glory of a lifelong covenant love. The wedding is truly just the beginning (a marvelous beginning though!). 🙂 Thank you for sharing your joyous wedding-day!

  3. Amber says:

Sarah & Buck your wedding photos are simply stunning! What a joyful day and couple!!

  4. Amanda says:

Just beautiful! Truly Everything! Congrats again!!! Happy Valentines Day!

  5. Sandra says:

Ahhhh!!!! I love hearing of other couple saving their first kiss. My husband and I did too, and though we received some criticism for it, we too think it was one of the best decisions ever. We actually reserved any physical contact till the wedding day, which was HARD (total understatement) but so very worth it. I don’t know you but your happiness radiates so very clearly and I adore every kissy picture (ok is that weird?) because I think it’s such a sacred beautiful thing and I love how you kept it special. And now I will quit gushing. 🙂 God bless you!

  6. Anna says:

Such a lovely day story and pictures. Can’t wait to hear the wedding dress story!

  7. This is too perfect for words! Your couple portraits are to die for!

  8. Sarah – these are all stunning. YOU are stunning sweet girl. I am so happy for you and you deserve ALL of the happiness in the world! 🙂

  9. Melissa Burke says:

So many great pictures! The First Look ones were fabulous. Besides those I loved the one with you and your sisters and also the one with your mom and dad with the double kiss. I cried through you explanation of what happened before the wedding. After the first kiss didn’t you want to just keep kissing?? LOL. What time was your wedding and what time were the receptions? I like how you had two and were able to have more people at the wedding. I’d also love to know who all the bridesmaids and groomsmen are and how you know them. Did you have to/get to do marriage counseling? Looking forward to the story of your wedding dress.

I had six weeks to plan my wedding and no clue on how long it takes to a dress or that I should make an appointment!! And this was before David’s bridal. And I was overwhelmed by the cost. We were at our 3rd place and I went to use the bathroom and there was a clearance rack right there with a simple dress that suited me. I tried it on and it fit perfectly. Took it home that day just three weeks or so before my wedding.

  10. Once again, I love these images. Your love for Buck and his for you radiate in a gentleness that I admire so much. 🙂 $38 FOR A WEDDING DRESS?! Dang girl, you need to teach me your shopping ways.

I also really love reading the tidbits about how your relationship with Buck began. So much happy. :)) I would love to skype whenever you get the chance– I miss you!

I just can’t get over how much joy this day exudes. everything looked perfect. everrrything!

  12. Sarah,

I love this post so so so so much. I just have to let you know that you inspire me so much. Your walk with God, your commitment to stay faithful to him. Your creativity, your PHOTOGRAPHY, (oh and your wedding….all of it…details, first look, EVERYTHING). I just adore you to death and i know many people who have been blessed to call you friend (IPS people, Tori Watson, etc.) I just adore it all. Thanks for sharing so freely and honestly on this blog. Your posts about envy and fear have really hit home. love always! <3 <3 xoxoxo

  13. I LOVE the pictures! Thank you for sharing details from the Day–looking forward to hearing the dress story! Oh my, you woke up really early! But man, you looked gorgeous! Those pictures in front of the National Cathedral are AMAZING. And the second to last picture with the bubbles–wow–I’ve never see so much bubble color in a picture!!! And hearing about your commitment not to kiss each other until Wedding Day was very encouraging to people like me who also want to do that. And Elizabeth Bristol (who commented above me) and I were just talking a couple of weeks ago about how much we really love your blog and especially your post on comparison (convicting much).

  14. Oh, and what was it like on the other side of the camera on wedding day? Since you’re a wedding photographer yourself, how involved were you with your own wedding photography? Did you say “How about let’s do this pose” and “Let’s do a picture here”? Or did you stay out of directing your own photographs completely (if so, was that hard?)?

  15. Shahed says:

This brought a smile to my face- absolutely gorgeous wedding and photos! I must admit I am tres impressed by the bow ties!!!

  16. Rachel B. says:

    I love that dress! $38?!

  17. Sara says:

So beautiful! I would love to hear more about how God brought you two together.. sounds like a wonderful story. 🙂

  18. Lydia says:

So, so beautiful, my friend! And I’m so, so happy for you!!

  19. Stephanie says:

Sarah, if a picture is worth a thousands words, a face is worth a thousand sermons. The radiance on your face is the same radiance I want on my face when my wedding day arrives!

  20. Lizzie S says:

What a privilege it is to see your wedding photos – thank you so much for sharing them. Stunning photos and stunning subjects. x

  21. You two are such an inspiration. God had a hand in us being there and we were so honored to be a small part of your grand love story.

God is so good and I pray that your marriage is a constant reflection of his grace and love.

Love you both, friends for life, in Christ. Ciao!

  22. Lauren says:

At last! But these pictures and this story was well worth the wait! I definitely want to hear about the wedding dress, and I love your story of saving your first kiss. This is what I plan to do as well!
I have been blessed by how you have emphasized that you wanted your wedding to proclaim the Gospel. I love how you used that as a lens to view all your plans with, but I am also wondering what details you added into the ceremony to make it specifically Gospel-centered? I’d love to hear about those!

  23. John Danaher says:

What a beautiful day that was. Thank you so much for posting these Sarah. Now I understand why you too seemed so comfortable together that day. I had no idea you did a first look. Absolutely beautiful!! Absolute happiness! You are both truly blessed.

  24. Rici says:

Dear Sarah!! These images make me so happy! I really love looking at them! They are so beautiful and overflowing with your joy! AMAzing!
Thank you for sharing some of your personal story background I really liked reading about that! Also that there are other girls out there, you know, sharing values and being patient. I wonder if some of the doubts about sharing things online you mentioned in the post before that are included here. Anyway, I think you are very courageous about writing about your first kiss and boundaries. Beautiful.
One question which I was having a long time, while reading about your wedding planning: how did you get such a great Photographer on such short notice?! I mean we all know the summer weekends are booked so crazy quick. How did you do it?
Oh and the dress story! please do tell! 😉 ^^
    Happy new week to you!
