We’re headed down to visit this charming home in just a few hours, so it feels fitting to share their home tour today! This gorgeous Brick Colonial Revival Home is in Richmond, was built in 1927, and is part of the Virginia Landmark Association’s National Register of Historic Places.
Most importantly, it’s the home of our dear friends Sheldon & Taylor Bates. Sheldon was Buck’s roommate in Governor’s School and for all four years of college, and now runs a successful orthodontist business in Richmond. Taylor and I met just after Sheldon proposed and while Buck and I were still dating— and thank God we get along, because Buck & Sheldon are a special kind of forever friends. Taylor and I joke that the “do we get along??” test was the final hoop to jump through before we could marry our respective husbands.
Needless to say, we adore these sweet Richmond friends of ours, and we try to see each other as often as possible. So when Taylor launched her new business, Taylor Bates Creative, and needed some portfolio images for her new website, we took that as an opportunity to make a weekend out of it!
Sheldon & Taylor are my favorite kind of DIYers. Taylor has vision, Sheldon has know-how, and they know when they need to outsource. Their home, though gorgeous when they purchased it, needed a lot of love to make it their own, and they’ve done much of it themselves. When we arrived to photograph the space, Sheldon was removing painters tape from their now-navy bookshelves, and Taylor was in the middle of sewing four sets of curtains. It’s amazing to watch them bring their skills together to create such gorgeous, functionally-elegant spaces!
