A Lowndes Grove Summer Wedding in Charleston

Lowndes Grove Charleston SC summer wedding Sarah Bradshaw Photography

Some weddings carry a love story so layered that every detail of the day seems to echo it back. Mary Caroline and Danny’s summer wedding at Lowndes Grove in Charleston, South Carolina, was exactly that kind of celebration— soft pink, white, and gold against the green of a Lowcountry summer, and a couple whose journey to this lawn had already spanned an ocean.

The two met in New Zealand, where Danny lived, and built their relationship across the distance after Mary Caroline moved back to the States. He later immigrated to the U.S. to marry her, and by the time they got engaged in 2024, their story already felt like one worth telling in full.

They chose not to see each other before the ceremony, opting instead for something quieter: private vows exchanged just between them, and a few minutes spent praying together before everything else began. It set the tone for a day that was, from the start, deeply felt.

When Mary Caroline walked down the aisle on the Lowndes Grove lawn, beneath a row of umbrellas shading guests from the summer sun, everyone had tears streaming down their faces. I photographed the moment from above with a drone, wanting a perspective that could hold the whole scene — the umbrellas, the water beyond, the weight of it all. Mary Caroline’s sister sang during the ceremony, and by the end, there wasn’t a dry eye on the lawn.

Cocktail hour unfolded waterfront, with custom lychee martinis passed among guests, but Mary Caroline and Danny slipped away for a few minutes of their own— a private walk down the dock, just to breathe and connect before the rest of the night took over. Reception followed in an open-sided tent, where the evening light and breeze moved freely through soft pink and gold florals.

The celebration didn’t stop at last call. Guests carried the night to Charleston’s American Theater for an after party complete with casino tables, pizza, sliders, and a DJ. The most unforgettable moment came when Danny’s friends from New Zealand surprised him with a Haka as a farewell to his old life — he wept as they performed it, a tribute to the distance he’d crossed, literally and otherwise, to be here.

It was a day built on two families coming together across continents, and a couple who, after years of long-distance love, finally got to stop waiting.
