The Historic Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach is firmly the latter—a landmark property with architecture, history, and light that make every frame feel considered. Ryan and Savannah’s October wedding was a reminder of exactly that, and it was also one of the most genuinely emotional days I’ve had the privilege of photographing.

The morning began slow and intimate, getting ready with family and wedding party. They opted for a first look outside on the Cavalier’s grounds, just the two of them, before the rest of the day picked up its pace. Wedding party portraits followed on the lawn (including their sweet golden retriever!), and we took time to use the drone to capture the expanse of the venue.

The ceremony took place in the Sunken Garden, one of Virginia Beach’s most quietly spectacular outdoor settings. Framed by mature trees and open October sky, it’s the kind of ceremony backdrop that requires very little embellishment. Ryan and Savannah’s day was already emotional by nature — the kind of love between them that reads clearly in every expression — and the Sunken Garden held all of it beautifully.

Guests moved to the Cavalier Loggias for cocktail hour, where the hotel’s iconic architecture provided a graceful backdrop as the afternoon light began to shift. By the time everyone gathered for dinner in the Crystal Ballroom, the elegance of the space met a reception full of warmth. One of my favorite details of the entire day was Savannah’s escort display: a mirror on which she had hand-painted cranes herself, each one guiding guests to their seats. It was the kind of personal touch that tells you everything about who a person is.

As the reception carried on inside, Ryan and Savannah slipped away to the Cavalier’s bell tower for sunset portraits — elevated above Virginia Beach, golden light, the whole thing. It’s a location that rewards couples willing to take a few minutes away from the party, and these two were absolutely worth it.
